The Problem Pocket Beta Solves

A new personal developer account on Google Play has to run a closed test before an app can go to production: at least 12 testers, opted in for 14 days in a row. Finding 12 people is hard. Keeping them using the app for two weeks is harder, because testers often install an app once and never open it again.

I'm the developer of Pocket Beta, and I had to get through that rule myself. Pocket Beta is the tool I wanted: a marketplace where developers test each other's apps, with a daily proof so you can see who is really using yours.

How It Works

  1. Test other developers' apps. Join a campaign, install the app, use it each day and submit a screenshot as proof.
  2. Earn credits. You earn credits for the testing you complete. You don't need an app of your own to start.
  3. Get your own app tested. Register your app, say how many testers you need, and spend your credits on a 14-day test.
  4. Watch it happen. Your dashboard shows which testers are active day by day, so you know where you stand before the 14 days are up.

It Got My Own App Through

Pocket Beta's own closed test ran on Pocket Beta: 28 testers joined and 22 completed the 14 days. Google then approved the app for production. Your numbers will depend on your app and how active your testers are, so treat those as one example, not a guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many testers does Google Play require?
For a new personal developer account, Google asks for a closed test with at least 12 testers opted in for 14 consecutive days before you can apply for production access. Check Google's current rules in the Play Console help, since they can change.

Is Pocket Beta free?
Yes, it's free to download, and you earn credits by testing other apps. You can also buy credits in the app if you'd rather not wait.

Do I need my own app to use it?
No. You can just test apps and earn credits. Register an app when you're ready to get it tested.

How do I know my testers are really using my app?
Testers submit a screenshot each day, and your dashboard shows who is active, at risk or has dropped out.

Is Pocket Beta on iPhone?
No, it's an Android app. Google Play's closed-testing rule applies to Android apps.

What data does it collect, and can I delete my account?
See the privacy policy. You can delete your account and data from the app's Profile screen.
