About
The developer behind Pocket Rigger, Drop Zone, and Jackpot
Hi, I'm Phill. I've been a software developer since 1988 — my first years were mainframe ALC and COBOL, back before object-oriented programming was even a common idea. Long enough since then to have gone from Windows Mobile PDAs to building the same app for iOS and Android from one codebase with .NET MAUI.
Three Apps, One Reason
Pocket Rigger, Drop Zone: Beat Brad, and Jackpot: Shut the Box don't have much in common on the surface — a bridle rigging calculator for touring professionals, a Connect Four game built around my son, and a dice game from a beach bar in Thailand. What actually ties them together is how they started: each one began as something real in my life first, and became an app second. Nobody set out to build "a rigging calculator" or "a board game" as a product. Steve needed the math. Brad and I had a running joke that needed a home. Phuket needed a souvenir I could actually keep using.
Why I Build Them
These are side projects, built in whatever time I can carve out around a full-time software job I'm not going to get into here — this site isn't about that. The honest reason I keep building them is that I have fun doing it. Past that, what I do want it to be about is caring, at a small scale, about software that's actually well made: a calculator that gets a rigger's numbers right every time, a game that stays fun even when Chaos Mode rearranges the board, a dice game that still feels like sitting on a beach in Phuket with a cold Singha.
