How to Play
Jackpot spells it out for you — literally. The 7 panels are numbered 1 through 7, and flipping them down one by one reveals the letters J-A-C-K-P-O-T. Roll two dice, then flip any combination of remaining panels that adds up to your roll — a 9, for example, could come from flipping the 2 and 7 panels, the 4 and 5 panels, or any other still-open combination that adds up to 9.
Keep going until you've either flipped every panel — a perfect Jackpot — or you roll a number with no valid combination left on the board, which ends the round.
Scoring
Your score is the sum of whatever panels are still standing when the round ends, so lower is always better — shutting the box completely is a score of zero. Every round is a small risk calculus: flip the biggest combination you can to clear more panels, or hold pieces back to keep more combinations open for future rolls?
Tips
- Early rolls are forgiving — almost any combination is still open. The real decisions come in the last few panels, when your options narrow fast.
- Flipping fewer, larger panels first keeps more small combinations available later, since small numbers combine into more totals than large ones do.
- There's no shame in going for a good score instead of a perfect one — Shut the Box has been a pub game for centuries because it's forgiving that way.
